If you are new to voice work, you may find this extra resonance strange, but it is worth remembering that we don’t hear our voices as other people do, so we are more aware of change. Our ears are in the wrong place, so we only get the bass. To check better how you sound from outside:

Hold your hands outstretched behind your ears, making ‘fans’ of them. Then speak. Now you will hear the ‘top’ in your voice and you will get a clearer idea of what other people receive.

It’s just as important to warm up and cool down vocally for screen work as it is for theatre. At the end of a long day:

Gently sip some water.

Hum up and down from top to bottom of your range. Or use a gentle ‘…ng’ sound to ‘siren’ up and down. This stretches your vocal folds. Just like stretching after jogging!
